Who Is Brett Brown?

After several seasons of failed coaches outside of the Doug Collins era where the Sixers made the playoffs and had a few good mid season runs, the SIxers have seemed to found a Head Coach that gets it and has a plan and a big picture in mind. Fans know him as the former assistant coach of the San Antonio Spurs, but outside of that coaching accolade, who is Brett Brown? Really! Well Sixers fans, let’s look at Brett Brown and understand who he is and where he came from on his own basketball journey which has led him to our city to coach our Philadelphia 76ers.

Brett Brown was born in South Portland Maine, where he also played High School basketball for his father Bob Brown at South Portland High School. His father was a New England Basketball Hall of Famer, where he retired in 2012 after coaching the school for 11 years. Brett went on to play college basketball at Boston University for four years under legendary coach Rick Pitino. Brown earned honors such as the Lou Cohen MVP in his sophomore year, as well as being named the team captain in his junior and senior year.

Brown has coached basketball in the professional ranks for over 25 years beginning in 1988 with the Australia Men’s Basketball team as an assistant coach which included him coaching in the 1998 World championships and also the Olympic Games in 1996 and 2000. Brett then when on to  coach in the NBL for the Melbourne Tigers where he won honors as NBL coach of the year in 1994, the same year he won the NBL championship over the Adelaide 36ers. Brown left the team in 1998 and took time off before returning to Australia to coach the Sydney kings in 2000 until 2002. In 2002 Brett Brown became an Assistant Coach for the San Antonio Spurs where he was served his 11-year tenure there and even helping the Spurs win the championship under future Hall Of Fame Coach Greg Popovich in 2007.

This brings us to his current status as yet again Head Coach. This time it’s with our wondrous Philadelphia 76ers. A team with much promise and a future that is being predicted to be a very bright one over the next 4 seasons, each season hoping to show more promise than the one before. Brown took on this job knowing that this team would not win immediately, but has a blueprint for contention in the future in which he will help lay out the foundation. So far Brown has let Evan Turner loose, amassed a budding superstar so far this season in rookie Michael-Carter Williams, introduced us to the scrappy and hard working Tony Wroten, and went 3-0 in a surprising start to his head coaching debut which included beating the NBA Champion Miami Heat. If this is a start of things to come, we are in for one joyous heck of a ride with this New England Native.

We welcome you yet again Mr. Brett Brown, you, your wife Anna, and your two daughters Julia and Laura, as well as your son Sam. Welcome once again to Philadelphia, a place where you will be loved wholeheartedly and scrutinized equally. We look forward to winning with you here in the future. The fans now have more of an idea as to who you are. Now, its’ up to you to show that your tenure here as an NBA Head Coach can speak as highly as the rest of your decorated resume.
